What do GB, RB and JB mean in Chak names?

If you are new to Faisalabad addresses, the letters after a Chak number can look confusing. They come from the canal system that the area’s villages were built around more than a century ago. Each village was given a number and the name of the canal branch that irrigates it:

  • GB stands for Gogera Branch
  • RB stands for Rakh Branch
  • JB stands for Jhang Branch

The letters matter. “Chak 103 RB” and “Chak 103 JB” are two different villages with two different postal codes (37660 and 37720), so always copy the full name exactly when you write the address.

  • Faisalabad GPO (main code): 38000
  • Madina Town: 38860
  • Peoples Colony No. 2: 38090
  • Ghulam Muhammad Abad: 38900
  • Gulistan Colony: 38610
  • Millat Town: 38070
  • Nishatabad: 38600
  • Punjab Medical College: 38800
  • Ayub Agricultural Research Institute: 38850
  • Jaranwala: 37250
  • Samundri: 37300
  • Chak Jhumra: 37700
  • Khurrianwala: 37630
  • Dijkot: 37370
  • Mamu Kanjan: 37000

What if my area is not in the list?

The city’s 38 series contains only 20 post offices, yet Faisalabad has many more colonies and housing schemes than that. Areas without a separate entry are served by a nearby delivery post office and share its code. Inside the city, the main code 38000 is commonly used when an area is not listed, and most forms accept it.

The same is true in the countryside. Most Chak villages do not have their own post office, so they use the code of the nearest one that does. If you live in a village, ask locally which post office delivers your mail before you choose a code.

How to find the right postal code for your Faisalabad address

  1. Check your post. A bill, bank letter or parcel label sent to your address will usually show the code.
  2. Identify the post office that delivers to you. Ask a neighbour, the village numberdar’s office or the postman.
  3. Find it in the tables — the 38 list for the city, the 37 lists for towns and Chaks.
  4. Verify it by searching the post office name in the official Pakistan Post post code directory.
  5. Ask at any Faisalabad post office if the answer is still unclear.

How Faisalabad postal codes work

Postal codes were brought in by Pakistan Post on 1 January 1988. A code has five digits: the first two show the district or sorting region, and the remaining three single out the delivery post office.

In Faisalabad’s case, city post offices carry the prefix 38, starting with the GPO at 38000, and the surrounding towns and villages carry 37. Each major city has its own starting digits — 53, 54 and 55 in Lahore, 46 and 47 in Rawalpindi, 59 and 60 in Multan — which you can see in our Lahore postal code list, Rawalpindi postal code list and Multan postal code list. For the federal capital and Sindh’s largest city, see the Islamabad postal code list and Karachi postal code list.

How to write a Faisalabad address correctly

For a city address:

Receiver's full name
House 22, Street 5, Block Y
Madina Town
Faisalabad 38860
Phone: 03XX-XXXXXXX

For a village address, include the Chak number with its letters, and the tehsil if you know it:

Receiver's full name
Chak 203 RB
Post Office Chak 203 RB
Faisalabad 37610
Phone: 03XX-XXXXXXX
  • Write the Chak number and letters in full, for example “Chak 203 RB”, not just “Chak 203”.
  • Put the postal code after the city or district name on the same line.
  • Add the block or sector in the city’s larger colonies, where house numbers repeat.
  • Always give a mobile number — it is often the quickest way for a rider to find a rural address.
  • For mail from abroad, add PAKISTAN in capital letters as the last line.

Tips for faster delivery in Faisalabad

  • For businesses in the markets and bazaars, give the shop number and bazaar name.
  • For factories and mills, add the company name and the road it stands on.
  • In villages, mention a well-known point such as the main mosque, school or adda.
  • Keep the tracking number or receipt until the delivery is complete.

Common mistakes with Faisalabad postal codes

  • Leaving out the canal letters. Chak numbers repeat across GB, RB and JB, each with a different code.
  • Using 38000 for towns like Jaranwala or Samundri. They have their own codes in the 37 series.
  • Using the phone code 041 in place of the postal code.
  • Entering four digits. A postal code in Pakistan always has five.
  • Guessing from a nearby colony or village. Neighbouring places can be served by different post offices.

Where your Faisalabad postal code is used

  • Buying online: local and international stores ask for a postal or ZIP code at checkout.
  • Export and business paperwork: invoices, shipping documents and company registrations need a full postal address — important in a city built on textile trade.
  • Banking and mobile wallets: your code is stored with your registered address.
  • University, job and visa applications: most forms will not submit without it.
  • Mail from overseas: postal services abroad sort items for Pakistan by code before they are flown in.

Sending post to Faisalabad from another country

Write the address in clear English capitals, put the city and code together on one line (for example FAISALABAD 38000) and finish with PAKISTAN on the last line. Add the receiver’s mobile number with the +92 country code, complete the customs form accurately and keep your tracking number. For village addresses, include the Chak number with its letters and the name of the delivery post office, because the sorter abroad will know nothing about the local area — the code and the post office name do the work.

About Faisalabad

Faisalabad is one of the largest cities in Pakistan and the centre of the country’s textile industry, which is why it is often called the “Manchester of Pakistan”. It was known as Lyallpur until 1977. The city centre is built around its famous Clock Tower (Ghanta Ghar), with eight bazaars spreading out from it, and the surrounding district is rich farmland watered by the canals that gave the Chak villages their names.
